Not every slow or misbehaving computer needs a repair — a decent chunk of the problems we see could have been sorted with a few basic checks first. Here's what's worth trying before you book anyone.
1. Restart it properly
Not just closing the lid or letting it sleep — a full shutdown, a short wait, then turning it back on. It sounds obvious, but it genuinely clears out a surprising number of glitches that build up over days or weeks of uptime.
2. Check the obvious physical stuff
Loose power cables, a charging port that needs a wiggle, a dodgy power board — physical connection issues get mistaken for bigger problems more often than you'd think.
3. Free up space and trim your startup programs
A hard drive or SSD that's nearly full can slow a whole system down. Likewise, a long list of programs launching automatically every time you start up adds up over time. Clearing out what you don't need can make a real difference.
4. Run a proper malware scan
Use your built-in antivirus (Windows Security on most PCs, or an equivalent tool) to run a full scan rather than a quick one. Malware and unwanted background programs are a common, and commonly overlooked, cause of a computer that's slowed right down.
5. Check for pending updates
Outdated operating system software can cause all sorts of odd behaviour, from slow performance to random errors. Check whether there are updates waiting to install, and let them finish properly rather than interrupting them partway through.
If none of that helps
If you've worked through all five and things still aren't right, it's probably something that needs a proper look rather than another round of guessing — that's when it's worth getting it diagnosed properly.
